Starting the New Year always means one thing in our household, winter cleaning. Every year, much to my dismay, we go through all of our things and choose what to keep and what to throw away/donate. This year we found a cool alternative to throwing things away. It's called the Freecycle Network (a play off the word recycle). It is an online network that is made up of 6,858,000 members in 4,872 communities throughout the US and 85 countries. This in turn decreases throwing things away, which creates less trash in landfills and helps the environment.
Membership is free (via Yahoo Groups) and there is a local moderator who grants access and monitors activity within the site, thus preventing scams and abuse found in other online marketplaces.
To sign up, go to www.freecycle.org and find your community by entering it into the search box (or you can browse the groups). You will then be prompted to fill out your contact information which will be forwarded to the moderator for approval. Once a part of the group you'll be able to search postings and receive email notices as new things are posted all in your area.
We posted a few items ourselves and found it to be an easy and quick way to get rid of some clutter throughout the house. An added bonus is you are helping out your neighbors!
