Could it be that San Francisco is providing an important example of how composting can have the on the reduction of landfill waste? Already, an additional 100 tons of composting waste has been diverted from landfills in San Fran due to a new law that requires food waste be composted and collected separately from trash.
A $500 fine seems harsh, and of course some will wonder it's the city's responsibility to enforce composting and recycling law, but it's certainly an interesting experiment in government involvement with mitigating landfill waste. Crazy part is that the increase in composting occurred before the law even went into affect.
See for yourself the effect it's had on San Francisco's quality of life.
