Planet Green has a fantastic little blog detailing tips on How to Pack a Zero Waste Lunch. I'm a fan of the thermos, especially the BPA free reusable water bottle or entirely plastic free (Sigg was mentioned in the blog, which I'm a fan of the single-piece aluminum vs. plastic), and the simple notion of skipping the brown bag and going straight for the eco-friendly, reusable container.
I commend PG on providing these eco treats to help you up the ante when it comes to packing a low-impact lunch that doesn't require eating cardboard to help Mother Earth.
Tips and my comments:
- Bring your own thermos - I've stopped shopping plastic water bottles and the like, so I'm a big supporter of the reusable water bottle or thermos. A thermos offers the distinct multi-role advantage for soups and other hot foods as well as juices and drinks.
- Reusable cutlery - I'm guilty often of forgetting a spoon or fork for my lunches, so don't follow my lead and go for the plastics. When I do remember, there's really no rocket science to taking an extra 10 seconds to pack silverware with your lunch.
- Skip the plastic wraps and throw-away containers - There are BPA free containers out there, including most Glad products according to their site, so it's really rather two decades ago to assume that foil and plastic baggies are the only option for transporting lunch goodies. If you want to go entirely eco, PG mentions the Fresh Snack Pack.
- Buy in bulk - Concept is rather simple, focusing instead on the bulk bins where you can combine various nuts, dried fruits, etc to make your trail mixes and other snacks. Skip the 100 calories packs if at all possible.
